Barlow’s Disease: Treating the Chords, Not the Leaflets, Is Key
8 hours ago Barlow’s disease is one of two types of degenerative mitral valve disease causing mitral regurgitation, the other being fibroelastic deficiency. In contrast to the leaflet and chordal thinning seen in fibroelastic deficiency, Barlow’s is characterized by a large valve with redundant tissue that causes the valve to appear thick and swollen (Figure).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Barlow syndrome?
Barlow’s syndrome is also known as a floppy-valve syndrome or mitral valve prolapse. Barlow’s Syndrome is a common condition that is basically the improper closure of the mitral valve. Mitral valve exists between the left atrium and the left ventricle of your heart. This is a condition, where two mitral valves do not smoothly close.
Can mitral valve prolapse be cured?
Treatment is not usually necessary as Mitral Valve Prolapse is rarely a serious condition. Regular checkups with a doctor are advised. People with rhythm disturbances may need to be treated with beta blockers or other medications to control tachycardias (fast heart rhythms).
Why is the mitral valve bicuspid?
… opening is guarded by the mitral, or bicuspid, valve, so named because it consists of two flaps. The mitral valve is attached in the same manner as the tricuspid, but it is stronger and thicker because the left ventricle is by nature a more powerful pump working under high pressure.
What does mitral valve prolapse feel like?
It may feel like pressure, squeezing, or heaviness in the chest (a crushing sensation), occurring and intensifying with activity and stress. The discomfort may also be felt in the back, the shoulders, and the arms, as well as the neck and the jaw. For some, mitral valve prolapse chest pain feels like heartburn or burning in the chest.
